This is one of the few books in English on tauromaquia that does not read like a rehashing of everything that's already been written about the bulls (in English). The author, Tristan Wood, is a respected aficionado with decades of experience, but he avoids making the book about himself, instead making every effort to explain not only the appearance of what happens en la plaza, but also the esthetic, psychological, and deeper practical aspects of toreo on foot and of rejoneo (the modern style of bullfighting on horseback). This is simply the most matter-of-fact and the most comprehensive guide to contemporary toreo in print. It is an excellent introduction for the merely curious and a worthy handbook for beginning and intermediate aficionadas and aficionados who want to improve their critical faculties.Although the book lacks a detailed index, the manner in which the information is presented makes navigation through the book relatively easy when using it as a reference work. ¡A los toros!
